Early Life and Rise to PowerMuhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Nasir, also known as Abd-ar-Rahman III, was born in Córdoba, Spain, in 891 CE. His mother was a Basque princess, and his father was the Umayyad emir of Córdoba. In 912 CE, Abd-ar-Rahman III became the emir of Córdoba, and in 929 CE, he declared himself the caliph, establishing the Caliphate of Córdoba.
